Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown isn't just a simple remaster of a decade-old game — it's been rebuilt using the Dragon Engine, which has been utilised for all of the most recent Yakuza titles. As such, Ultimate Showdown represents quite the graphical and technical leap when compared to the original Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown.

And compare we shall! SEGA has released a new trailer that puts character models and stages side by side. The improvements are crystal clear.

About Robert Ramsey

Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown Is a Serious Step Up in Graphics Comparison Trailer (3)

Robert (or Rob if you're lazy) is an assistant editor of Push Square, and has been a fan of PlayStation since the 90s, when Tekken 2 introduced him to the incredible world of video games. He still takes his fighting games seriously, but RPGs are his true passion. The Witcher, Persona, Dragon Quest, Mass Effect, Final Fantasy, Trails, Tales — he's played 'em all. A little too much, some might say.

I’m really looking forward to this, although I’ve never been very good at VF. I have a passable Sarah, but more often then not I get annihilated by average players. I guess they’ll be keeping the wonky jumping and arial floatiness of the original, which is fine by me. Can’t wait to hear that little three note chime that plays when you press start again.

Looking forward to this. My experience with VF has been an eye-toy minigame on PS2, and a bit of VF2 and VF5 via the Yakuza series. Will be nice to properly get into VF5.

I'm looking forward to trying this, but I don't trust fighting games anymore. I'm fully expecting VF5 to be jam-packed full of microtransactions and monetisation. A lot of ps+ games that sound too good to be true end up being glorified demos designed to get you spending.

I haven't played VF since the Sega Saturn days. Looking forward to giving this a bash via PS+

I played a lot of VF5 on PS3 and loved it. However, even then I thought the blue-ish bloom effect gave the game a bit of a steril and "cold" atmosphere so I'm glad to see that Sega hasn't brought it over to this version.

I have the digital PS3 version and its a great looking game there too. You could do a lot of costume customisation on PS3, so wonder if they will bring that over.

I don’t know how I feel about this. I mean I will buy it so let’s get that out of the way. VF is my favorite fighting franchise.

However:

Pros: VF is back! Please let this revitalize the franchise.
Stage redesigns!
New music!

Cons: Ps4 only (this should be multiplat)
Not feeling the new character models and terrified of what they are gonna do to Vanessa.
New UI looks weird (this is minor)
Doesn’t look like any moveset or balance changes...

Seriously SEGA, I own 4 copies of this game already. Where is VF6?

I seriously suck at fighters, I used to play Killer Instinct, Mortal Kombat 3 and a little later Tekken 2 as a kid. Unlocked all the characters due to the fact I only had like 10 games to pick from on each platform (SNES and PS). Since the days of ps2 and having 40+ games I have never bothered to play fighting games anymore. I might give it a go, though. Seems like a good place to start again, even though I also have UMvC3 and I love the style of that one. I just never get all those damn combo prompts. How the heck do people remember them and get them right every time? XD

@WCB
It’s not only that there’s no plat, the trophies just require playing loads of online matches, but with no need to win! Apart from being not fun or challenging, it could also lead to a load of people going AFK!

@somnambulance A fighting game that doesn't even include rollback in 2021, ain't my fighting game of the year.

@rachetmarvel For me, I don’t play fighters online, just as like pvp in person, so it makes no difference to me, but I can see where you’re coming from

@WCB yeah, that trophy list is brutal!

@thefourfoldroot yeah man, 1200 matches is a lot! Most should be done in online modes too, so if the netcode is bad then forget it. Only people you'll find are boosters and champs.
