Do you need a referral for occupational therapy in California? ›

A. The occupational therapist conducting the assessment may determine the need for treatment services. As an occupational or physical therapist gait training or functional ambulation is a fundamental treatment we perform with many of our patients. PTs usually work with people who have sustained an injury and are trying to get back to their normal lives, while OTs usually spend their time with clients who are struggling with motor skills or behaviors due to developmental delays or disorders, health conditions, or injuries.
